One of SoHo’s classic 6-story cast iron buildings, 20 Greene Street was constructed around 1880 for light industrial use. Now it houses expansive lofts converted from artists’ studios famously active during the 1960s and 70s. For this project, ACHA restored the rear courtyard-facing brick façade and fire escape. The anchors for its metal window shutters are still visible and were restored within the parameters set by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Prior to their restoration, the brownstone lintels and sills were cracked and the quarries from which they were sourced have long since been depleted. To restore these architectural elements, ACHA worked with Cathedral Stone to laboratory-test and determine the original stone color. Color mixes were then created to match the stone. The flashing at the ground floor retail skylight and at the top of the rooftop stair were chronically leaking and were also repaired during the restoration.
