When the opportunity to purchase an apartment adjacent to their own Madison Avenue apartment presented itself to ACHA’s long-time clients, they called Höcek to design a renovation that would combine the two spaces and incorporate his earlier design of their existing home.

Madison II / Upper East Side

The design addresses the client’s request for maintaining as much of the existing layout as possible. While this resulted in a long connecting corridor between the two apartments, ACHA was able to propose several variations activating the space and leading to the living room. The sequence ends there, with a large painting by Herman Cherry, Imaginary Territories.

This is ACHA’s third apartment design for this former director of the Museum of the Moving Image (MMI) and her philosopher husband. ACHA has also designed a weekend home for them on Shelter Island, as well as the permanent exhibition at MMI and other MMI renovations over the years.
