Following the success of their design for the core exhibition at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City, ACHA was invited to participate in a feasibility study and schematic design for the Museum of the Moving Image Mumbai, India.  The proposed museum and research center for Indian cinema is located on a tree filled site of 25-acres (10-hectare) on which several colonial era buildings stand, and, accordingly the museum had to be designed in compliance with all landmark requirements. ACHA, in collaboration with local architect Sapna Kumar Associates, prepared a feasibility study proposing the renovation and repurposing of 15,000sf (1400sm) of existing construction, and the addition of 30,000sf (2800sm) of exhibition spaces, offices, screening theaters, seminar rooms, and production and support facilities. ACHA’s design includes a below-ground exhibition space, restaurant, and outdoor theater. These form a connection between the existing and new buildings. By joining the buildings below ground, the design protects visitors and exhibits from the intense sunlight, while preserving the character of the colonial buildings and existing trees.
