Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are a forward-thinking response to contemporary housing challenges. These small, self-contained residential dwellings, located on the same lot as a primary home, can take various forms, from basement apartments and attic conversions to detached, fully independent structures.
ADUs provide homeowners with versatile options, such as creating space for extended family—whether for returning college graduates or aging parents—or generating additional income through rental opportunities. Beyond individual benefits, ADUs help alleviate chronic housing shortages, offering practical solutions that strengthen communities.
This project in Vermont, designed for a young couple expecting their first child, exemplifies ACHA's commitment to creating site-specific solutions. After conducting thorough research, the soon-to-be mother recognized the advantages of an ADU and reached out to ACHA to explore designs specific to their needs.
ADUs are gaining traction across the region and in New England. In addition to the Vermont project, another is being proposed in the Hudson Valley. In New York City, the City of Yes zoning amendment has embraced ADUs as a critical component of housing policy. This initiative allows ADUs in one- and two-family homes within low-density districts, providing an accessible pathway to expand housing options. Learn more about the City of Yes program here.
